    When an Infection Walks In Your Office (and Ruins Your Day!)


    In this course, attendees will be presented with a brief history of infections, followed by a summary of orofacial infection workup, diagnosis and surgical management. Case studies will be presented, emphasizing the importance of the timeliness of care and proper airway management. Pertinent facial anatomy will be reviewed, as well as medical and surgical treatment. Proper radiographic workup will also be presented, including plain films and CT scan. Importance will be placed on prompt diagnosis and treatment.

    • Explain the importance of timely treatment of odontogenic infections
    • Recognize the most common fascial spaces involved with odontogenic infections
    • Understand what entails a proper workup for suspected infection
    • List the most common radiographic studies used for proper infection diagnosis
    • Compare and contrast the most common and effective antibiotics used for orofacial infections
    • Describe the various surgical approaches to the facial skeleton when treating infections
    • Review the decision tree for outpatient versus inpatient infection management
    • Identify when it is appropriate to treat versus refer to a specialist


  • Christopher Blount, DDS is a Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, based in Amherst, Massachusetts. He is currently President and Managing Partner of Connecticut Valley Oral Surgery Associates, a four office, four doctor group practice located in Western Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. He is a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, and completed surgical residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Before private practice, he served as a dental officer in the US Army for nine years, finishing his military career as Department Chief at Winn Army Community Hospital, Fort Stewart, Georgia. He has particular clinical interest in implantology and reconstruction, and pediatric surgery and anesthesia. He lives in Amherst with his wife Nicolette, who’s here today, and his three daughters. He is thrilled to be invited to speak at Yankee!
