Implant Maintenance: Parts, Chemistry, and Compatibility in Dental Hygiene

We are now 40 years since professor Brånemark introduced his research on osseointegration to the dental community. Dental Implants provide our patients with successful long-term restorative solutions for function, comfort, and aesthetics. Today, Dental Hygienists are seeing more patients with dental implants. Implant manufacturers have introduced new implant designs, implant surfaces, and surface chemistry that affect biocompatibility and maintenance protocols. Therefore, there is a concern if what we are using to reduce the peri-implant inflammation may negatively affect the biocompatibility of the implant surface and the implant’s long-term success. This class will review dental implant component materials and design and the biological compatibility of commonly used instruments, technology, and therapeutic materials.

    • Review the history of osseointegration and dental implant therapy
    • Identify dental implant components for single-tooth and full-arch treatment concepts
    • Implement maintenance protocols for the prevention of peri-implantitis
    • Understand biologically safe instrument materials to use on dental implants
    • Compare home care products and techniques safe for implant maintenance

  • Lynn Pencek, RDH brings a unique balance of industry knowledge and clinical experience to her presentations. As a member of the Nobel Biocare team, she helped offices bring in new technology and develop efficient workflows for dental implant treatment. As a school manager with Hu-Friedy, she possesses a high level of knowledge about instrument design. Lynn has experience with surgical assisting, clinical workflows, digital case planning for guided surgery, account and inventory management, marketing, and patient education for case acceptance.

Being a Dental Hygienist, Lynn wanted to learn more about the care and maintenance of dental implants than what was provided. Lynn is passionate about unraveling the questions and common misunderstandings dental hygienists have about dental implant maintenance and has founded her company “Practice at Your Best”.
